The (5th annual) Freelancer Christmas Party

The (5th annual) Freelance Christmas Party

I’ve been a freelance journalist unofficially since 2010, when I went on maternity leave with our son and made the decision not to return to full-time out-of-the-home “real” work.

It took a few years for me to realize I was missing out on some of the fun parts of a “real” job with colleagues … like office Christmas parties.

So in December of 2013, I decided to start throwing my own …

This year, however, it feels like December has been one sickness after another. I had the world’s worst pee-your-pants hacking cough, then the OMG-gonna-die stomach virus.

I woke up this morning with a sore throat and sniffles, so the party got off to a slow start. After all, it’s all about the employees, right? Lots of hot tea, a few homemade chocolate brownies, and the finale of Project Runway, Season 2. #santinowasrobbed #seriously

Once I felt well enough to put on some damn makeup, the super-itchy Ugly Christmas Sweater, and some hair baubles (swiped from the tree), it was PARTY TIME!

I made sure to set up my pretty pink Fujifilm X-A3* on the tripod — and use my iPhone as the remote — so I could snap photos for you guys along the way.

For something a little different this year, The Management decided we’d go to an Escape Room!

I was pumped because I’ve always wanted to go to one. So we all piled into the room, they locked the door, and we had to figure out clues in order to get out during the time limit.

It was honestly more stressful than I thought it would be! You really feel the time crunch when you’re in there, and I kind of panicked that I’d get an answer wrong and let the whole team down.

BUT WE MADE IT! #woohoo #goteam #werock #smartycrew

Then we headed back to the boardroom — this is the first year we have a real boardroom table!!! — and it was time for Secret Santa.

It was underwhelming, I must admit. Oh well.

I made out with my Secret Santa anyway. As one does! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

By this point, we were starving and The Management had put out quite the spread! A dessert buffet and all-you-can-drink Diet Coke — the good stuff in the silver can, none of that sissy caffeine-free stuff because IT WAS A PARTY, DAMNIT!

After we had noshed a little something, it was time for the awards ceremony. I was SO HONOURED to win Employee of the Year for the fifth year in a row. FIVE YEARS! I mean, that has to be some kind of record. I feel a little bad for the other employees because, really, they don’t have a chance of catching up with me. 😉

Employee of the Year FIVE! YEARS! RUNNING!

Thanks for virtually attending my 5th Annual Freelancer Christmas Party! Make sure to pop into the other parties my friends have been throwing, because THERE AIN’T NO PARTY LIKE A FREELANCE PARTY, amirhgt?!

Merry Christmas! xo
