DIY silhouette art

DIY silhouette art {Heather's Handmade Life}

I’m always guffawing at the prices of simple silhouette art in home decor stores. A solid-coloured canvas with a solid-coloured silhouette in the middle — a crown, a dog, a purse, a hamburger (OK I haven’t seen a burger painting but I’d sure like that in my house) — and they’re charging $40. Really???

Today I’m sharing how VERY VERY EASY it is to make your own, and zero artistic ability is required.

You’ll need:

  • Wooden canvas (if you’re using a regular canvas, you’ll want to use this method)
  • Printer paper + access to the almighty Google
  • A ballpoint pen + some hand muscles
  • Acrylic-ish paint (I used my go-to Fusion, but Dollar Store stuff is fine for a project like this)
  • A small craft brushDIY silhouette art {Heather's Handmade Life}

1. Choose a silhouette. I was making this one for a client’s daughter who LOVES corgis, so I Googled “corgi silhouette” and there were tons of choices. It doesn’t matter if there are watermarks, copyrights etc. on them (many silhouettes are from stock photo sites) because you’re not using the graphic itself. Print that sucker out!

2. Trace it. Place your printed silhouette over your wooden canvas. Then grab your ballpoint pen and trace around it — pressing HARD so you make a light indentation in the wood.

3. Outline it. Using a tiny craft brush and the paint of your choice, paint over the indentation to get your outline.

4. Fill it in. Depending on the colour of paint (and the brand/variety), this could take a few coats, but it’s easy because you’ve already done the hard part of outlining.

5. Glitter + seal (optional). For this canvas, I used spray sealer + white glitter (you KNOW I love glitter) to give the Corgi a little flair. Then I coated the whole thing with poly to keep the glitter in place and give it a nice shine.

I used the same method in Addy’s gallery wall to make her a pink unicorn silhouette with pink glitter.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I might try making some hamburger silhouette art. 😉

Pin this for later!
