May baby?

27 weeks, 4 days pregnant
Remember like 10,000,000 years ago — when I was nine weeks, five days pregnant — when I got my H1N1 shot (and flu shot)?
Well, I’m actually part of a country-wide study about preggos and H1N1. So every Monday, I log into a website and fill out a little form about whether or not I have any flu symptoms. And in exchange, I’m helping the medical community blah blah blah getting a weekly update from the study’s coordinators.
What does the update say? Well, they believe there is a link between the H1N1 vaccine and early deliveries. As in lots of babies whose mommies got the shot are coming EARLY!

Yup, the study coordinators are buzzing about this news. It’s not proven yet, of course, because the study is still ongoing. But they believe there could be a definite link. There’s also some internet chatter about it, although it’s nothing official.
Of course, I don’t want Baby Boy coming too early — like Duggar early, or any form of “early” that might hurt him. But he is due in the first week of June, so coming at the end of May instead? Sounds good to me!

Pumpin’ (poppin’) iron

27 weeks, 3 days pregnant
What was that? I left out a huge part of my doctor’s appointment yesterday, just so I could make it a separate, single-focused post? Oh yeah, that was me.
The big bombshell? I have … low iron.
Not that big of a deal, right? That’s what I thought! But the nurse — who was not Friendly Nurse, unfortunately — acted like I had hours to live, or something.
Let me back up: After I had my glucose test a few weeks ago, I had gotten bloodwork done. When I sat down yesterday, the nurse said the results from the test were fine (as I kind of figured, seeing as I’m the queen of low blood sugar).
But then she looked at me seriously and said my “hemoglobin” was very low. I panicked for a second, thinking, “What the hell is hemoglobin???” and then she explained that it was my iron. I had low iron.
BFD, right? My mom has low iron. Darling Husband has low iron. No biggie.
And I noticed there was a Post-it and a highlighted note on my folder, saying a big fat “99.” Not-so-nice Nurse went on to explain that normal levels for women were between 120 and 160, and I was … yup, 99. According to my last round of bloodwork, my level was 125 at that point. Oops.
Then the nurse — who I was really started to dislike by this point — took a pamphlet off the wall and read it to me. Like I was an idiot. I felt like saying, “Um, now that I know I have low iron, I’ll work on it. Promise.”
So here is the outcome out my low-iron-ness:
  1. I will take one slow-release iron pill every day (with orange juice, which improves iron absorption)
  2. I will increase my fibre intake (since taking iron supplements can cause the C-word)
  3. I will work on eating more iron-rich foods
Here’s the CliffsNotes version of what the nurse told me:
Eating these foods helps to increase your iron absorption (i.e. eat this stuff with the iron-rich stuff):
  • Oranges
  • Orange juice
  • Cantaloupe
  • Strawberries
  • Grapefruit
  • Broccoli
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Tomatoes
  • Potatoes
  • Green & red peppers
Iron-rich grains:
  • Brown rice, 1 cup cooked (0.8 mg)
  • Whole wheat bread, 1 slice (0.9 mg)
  • English Muffin, 1 plain (1.4 mg)
  • Cream of Wheat, 1 cup (10.0 mg)
  • Raisin bran cereal, 1 cup (6.3 mg)
Iron-rich legumes, seeds, and soy:

  • Sunflower seeds, 1 ounce (1.4 mg)
  • Soy milk, 1 cup (1.4 mg)
  • Kidney beans, ½ cup canned (1.6 mg)
  • Raw Spinach, 1 cup 1 (mg**)
  • Cooked Spinach, 1 cup (3.5 mg **)

Iron-rich vegetables:

  • Broccoli, ½ cup, boiled (0.7 mg)
  • Green beans, ½ cup, boiled (0.8 mg)
  • Potato, fresh baked, cooked w/skin on (4.0 mg)
  • Vegetables, green leafy, ½ cup (2.0 mg)

Other iron-rich foods:

  • Blackstrap Molasses, one tablespoon (3.0 mg)
  • Dates or Prunes, ½ cup (2.4 mg)
  • Beef, Pork, Lamb, three ounces (2.3 to 3.0 mg)
  • Liver (beef, chicken), three ounces (8.0 to 25.0 mg*)
  • Dark meat Turkey ¾ cup (2.6 mg)
  • Pizza, cheese or pepperoni, ½ of 10 inch pie (4.5 to 5.5 mg)

Questions and answers

27 weeks, 3 days pregnant
Had my regular OBGYN appointment yesterday, and overall it went pretty well. I went in armed with the following (somewhat rational) questions:
  1. How do we get a pediatrician for the baby?
  2. How do we go about getting him circumcised (the baby, not the pediatrician)?
  3. When do my appointments become bi-weekly?
Oh, and the bonus question: “My baby seems to move around less than usual. Cause for panic???”
And came out with the following (somewhat annoying) answers:
  1. “You do not get a pediatrician unless anything is wrong with your baby. Just use your family doctor or your husband’s.” Boo!
  2. “The baby will be checked out at birth, and then that doctor will refer you to the doctor that does circumcisions — and that will be done outside of the hospital, a week or so later. And you have to pay for it, because it’s not covered.” Double boo!
  3. “You start coming in bi-weekly at 28 weeks. Since you’re 27 weeks (and change) right now, you should come back in three weeks, when you’re 30 weeks.” Eh … OK, fine.
Oh, and the bonus question’s answer? “As long as you can count six movements in two hours, he’s fine.” Well, I can definitely do that, so … I guess I won’t worry anymore? Or as much, at least. I don’t think I’m capable of not worrying.

5 pregnancy over-shares

27 weeks, 2 days pregnant
  • Yesterday evening, my ankles were a bit puffy (as usual). I absentmindedly pushed my finger into one, to see what it felt like. When I lifted my finger off it, there was a huge INDENT in my ANKLE, that slowly faded. I am officially human Silly Putty. Little Sis was incredibly grossed out.
  • Peeing has become more of a trickle. I remember Dusty from All Things G&D had this issue when she was pregnant. It’s weird.
  • Also: sometimes when I’m done peeing, I get a weird kind of pressure-y feeling. Is Baby Boy shifting because his comfy cushion (a.k.a. my bladder) has just deflated? No clue.
  • I almost accidentally rolled off the couch last night, while trying to get up. I caught myself just in time, but I am positive Little Dog laughed at me.
  • I was out of clean maternity undies this morning, so I wore a pair of my regular, pre-preggo ones. They are riding up the butt, and it makes me a little sad. They used to fit, dammit!

Not Me Monday

27 weeks, 1 day pregnant
  • I am not working my way through the Little House series for the seven-billionth time. I would never read such childish literature, and I would certainly never propose that Baby Boy’s middle name should be “Almanzo.”
  • I did not beg Darling Husband to bake me chocolate-chip cookies all weekend, until I was almost in tears on Sunday with the request.
  • When the cookies were done, I certainly did not eat a bunch of them — with two glasses of milk — instead of eating a healthy, balanced lunch.
  • I stole lovely friend C‘s adorable, smiley, happy baby boy. I just couldn’t help myself. He lives with me now, and when Baby Boy arrives, he will be surprised to find he already has a slightly older brother. I am not returning him anytime soon.
