Dear Baby …

30 weeks, 5 days pregnant
Dear Baby,

I bought your playard yesterday on my lunch break, and couldn’t wait to come home and set it up. It has a bassinet on the top, and that’s where you will sleep when we first bring you home from the hospital.

Daddy was working, but I was determined to put it together myself. It was frustrating, because I couldn’t reach into it very well (on account of you), but I didn’t stop messing around with it until it was standing proudly next to my side of the bed.

I’m sure people think I’m crazy for setting it up — sheets and all! — 65 days before you are scheduled to arrive. But I don’t care.

Last night I went to sleep with one hand resting on the side. I can’t wait until you’re lying there, next to me.

xoxo

So … very … pregnant …

30 weeks, 4 days pregnant
Pregnancy is a funny thing. I find certain weeks go by and are very uneventful, and others give you daily slap-in-the-face reminders of your knocked-up-ness.
This week (Week 31) has been a slap-in-the-face week. Not really in a bad way, just in a very … noticeable, holy-crap-I-am-super-duper-preggo way.
For example:
  • The cold that won’t go away. I have had 40% of a cold for the last couple of weeks. It’s weird. I wouldn’t call myself “sick,” but yet I’ve been coughing a lot, sniffling, feeling run-down, etc. Apparently that is very common during the third trimester, because my immune system is being suppressed in order to protect the baby from being rejected by my body. I miss DayQuil.
  • The pool balls in my stomach. Yes, you read that correctly. I have taken to describing Baby Boy as “three pool balls thudding around in my stomach.” Sometimes when I’m walking, he feels soooo low, and I keep visualizing the weight of three billiard balls. That’s just how he feels!
  • The constant movement. It’s impossible to forget I’m pregnant this week, because Baby Boy has (thankfully) been moving around like crazy. I’ve been feeling him “cover a larger area” than before, too — like jabs that seem to happen almost on my sides (especially my right side). He feels so strong! Mama’s little bruiser 🙂
  • The ever-expanding-ness. When I walk into the bathroom to pee (oh, about eighty-five times a day), I’ve been surprised by my profile. My stomach juts so far out! And when I walk around, I just feel so heavy.
  • The tiredness. I am so, so, so glad the nursery is done (and almost everything we need is purchased), because in the words of Kate Gosselin, “I’m done. I’m just done.” My energy this week has been zero, and I don’t know if it will come back or what. I am eternally grateful to my second-trimester-self, for getting so much done. Seriously, people thought I was a crazy keener, but that advice will be my legacy to other second-trimester chicks: get it done now. Yes, you have lots of time left, but you will not have the energy then.

Exactly how pregnant …

30 weeks, 3 days pregnant
Exactly HOW PREGNANT do you have to be for …
  • … a bus driver to wait until you sit down before hurtling away from the curb into traffic, causing your preggo ass to stumble around the aisle helplessly?
  • … a passenger to give up their seat to you, on a totally crowded bus?
Because I have been pregnant forever for 213 days, and so far no one has given up their seat to me, and a bus driver only waited until I was sitting down once.

I can’t wait until I’m not bundled up under my winter coat, so I can stick my belly out and demand my special commuter treatment!

Boomerang effect

30 weeks, 2 days pregnant
For my baby shower, Little Sis got me the Jolly Jumper Boomerang pillow. I love-love-love things that have multiple uses — because it means less stuff is required — and this pillow can be used for nursing and for propping up your baby on a blanket on the floor. So cute!
What I didn’t realize, when I registered for it, is that it can also be used before your baby even arrives. Hell yeah! The boomerang shape means you can put it between your legs, and have the “side” of the boomerang support either your bump or your back. I’ve been sleeping with it for the last two nights, and it’s soooo comfy!
And yes, my side of the bed is pretty much all pillows now. Ahhhh. Oh, what’s that, Darling Husband? I can’t hear you from within my pillow fortress.

Great expectations

30 weeks, 1 day pregnant

You might remember that last week, just before my shower, that I was worried about how Darling Husband and I were going to buy the “big items” we need for the baby.

Well, we figured out long ago that there were five big-ticket items we needed:
  • Crib
  • Dresser
  • Playard with bassinet
  • Travel system (stroller with snap-in infant carseat)
  • Glider and ottoman
While we got tons — and I mean, really, tons — of amazing stuff at the baby shower, we were still lacking all of the big items (except the crib).
  • Crib (gift from my mom)
  • Dresser
  • Playard with bassinet
  • Travel system (stroller with snap-in infant carseat)
  • Glider and ottoman
My worrying was reaching an all-time high.
The dresser we wanted was $399.
The Playard we wanted was $220.
The travel system we wanted was $299.
And the glider/ottoman we wanted was $269.

That’s $1,187 before tax. And we now had to buy all of it — plus all the other stuff we didn’t get at the shower? PANIC MODE!

It’s been a busy week, but here is how it all worked out …

Dresser
Mom actually bought the changing table for us, because she happened to see it on clearance in another department store. We’re so glad she did, because once we added some dark wicker baskets to the shelves, it became a great place to store Baby Boy’s clothes and changing supplies.

Travel System
We originally registered for the Graco Mosaic travel system, and we were OK with buying it ourselves. But when a friend told Darling Husband about a huge baby sale at another store, we checked it out. They had this First Years Magna Light travel system on for $140, but it was normally $299 (the same price as our original pick), and we couldn’t pass up such a great deal.

Glider

Yup, we got the glider we originally wanted — just at a much lower price! I happened to check the department store’s website and see that the glider was marked down $70 until April 2 (taking it to $199), and then when we went in to order it, we got another $20 taken off (random coupon from the clerk) plus 10% off for buying something off our own registry. It’s all ordered, and will be a gift from Darling Husband’s parents. Yay!

Playard
We haven’t bought this yet, but we already figured out how to pay for it. We cashed in our AirMiles and some department store points to buy a few giftcards, and that will be enough to cover a Playard and the other few things we still need to buy (changing pad cover, ear thermometer, etc.). Can’t wait for the giftcards to arrive in the mail!
