HEATHER’S HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE: Gifts for creatives

There’s nothing I love better than a gift that relates to one of my hobbies, and that’s pretty easy to pick out … if we’re talking about a new top to wear to my Zumba classes.
But my OTHER many, many, many hobbies? Sewing clothes, quilting woodworking, drawing, painting, redoing furniture, etc? Other than gift cards (which I do love), people are often stumped as to how they can contribute to my crafty habits.
Yes, there ARE tangible gifts for creatives, crafters, and diehard hobbyists — gifts they’ll regularly use and appreciate. You might want to try one of these …
1. A good pair of fabric scissors.
Lemme tell you a story about this one time A CERTAIN SOMEONE took my sewing scissors and used them on paper, which totally dulled them. It was … me. Whoops. Luckily, it was years ago when I was only using cheap fabric scissors. These days, I have two pairs. including these ones. If someone gifted me with a third pair, I’d be super happy! I’m always losing them underneath mounds of fabric while I’m sewing.
2. A crafty book.
For a super-crafty person, I probably own about five crafting/sewing books total. That needs to change! It’s nice to have something creative to flip through, other than Pinterest.
These are two of my favourites: Hand Lettering A to Z, and The Art of Drawing Dangles. Hand-lettering is something I never really focused on improving until I got this book. I tried some of my new skills on this Clay Cafe mug recently, and I love it!
3. A gorgeous notebook or sketchbook.
If you read this post and only remember one thing, it’s this: every creative person needs an awesome place to write things down or sketch out ideas. Wait, did I say “an awesome place”? I mean THIRTY-FIVE TO SIXTY NOTEBOOKS ON THE GO AT ALL TIMES.
Like these ones that give me all the heart-eyed emojis …
4. A pin nailer.
Know a crafty person who WANTS to be the kind of person who builds things and takes their creativity to the next level, but doesn’t really own any tools?
The RYOBI AirStrike Pin Nailer is a super gentle way to transition from crafty standards — like glue guns and staple guns — to THE NEXT LEVEL.
I don’t have one (yet) but I can already feel my finger on the trigger. Click, click, click, click, click! (You can drive more than 3,800 nails on a single battery charge. Hubba, hubba!)
5. A pyrography set.
Not many people have one of these wood-burning kits, and they are SO MUCH FUN. My sister gave me one two Christmases ago, and I have had a blast with it. They’re easy to use, small to store, and you can make really unique pieces.
6. Paints.
More specifically, a type of paint they do NOT already use. I was comfortable with acrylics, so more recently I have been dabbling in watercolours and oils — two paints with which I am *not* comfortable or familiar. It’s fun to experiment, even if you’re terrible at it.
7. Wonder Clips.
What the heck are these little things that look like staplers, you might be wondering (Ha “wonder”-ing). They’re Wonder Clips — basically, an alternative to sewing pins — and I get all Veruca Salt (“I want it nowwwwww!”) when I talk about them.
I’ve asked my sweet sissy to give them to me for Christmas, so I can report back later on how I love them. (I know I will.)
