The importance of raising children "properly"

“When you’re raising children, you don’t both go off to work and leave them for somebody else to raise. This is not a statement against daycare. It’s a statement about their belief in the importance of raising children properly.”
— Iris Evans, Alberta finance minister
Wow! An article on
CBCnews.ca is causing people to go ballistic.
Alberta Finance Minister Iris Evans commented that she felt children should have one parent at home while they’re young, and people are saying she should be fired.
The article has nearly 1,000 comments already, and CBC started a poll, too…
You can just guess what I voted for, and look — 28% of people agree with me …
Unfortunately, the “different for every situation” answer really skewed things. Obviously, I do believe that it is different for every situation. I was raised by a single parent, and I think I turned out pretty damn good.
But it would have been more interesting to see what people chose between “one parent should stay home” and “both parents working is just as good.”
What would you have chosen?

I grew up in a house where both of my parents worked. I went to a babysitter after school, but came home at suppertime with parents who took very good care of me, loved me and taught me many things — meanwhile working hard to provide me with the most advantages they could. I think I'd vote in the “it's different in every situation” category, mainly because I believe that two working parents can do a great job, but if I have the opportunity (read: family income) to stay at home, I certainly will.
I also believe it takes a village to raise a child in the sense that I hope my children's aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, teachers, neighbours and friends will help contribute to a lifetime of quality education and experience.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Lindsey.
I also had a babysitter growing up, and while she was great, I hope that when I have kids, I can be the one that spends that after-school time with them. Let's hope the finances agree with me, so I can!
