Five awesome new things my 11-month-old just learned to do

  1. Wave. He seemed to be a little late on the wave-train, but now he’s really gotten it. He waves at us. He waves when visitors leave. I’m really obsessive about making sure to always have the people wave back, so he gets the give-and-take nature of the wave. Although yesterday I saw him look out the window and wave … but no one was out there. At least no one I could see. Perhaps he was waving at that moving truck across the parking lot?
  2. Say “Yum-yum-yum.” It started with a few bites of whipped cream. He made a “Mmmmm” noise as he sucked it off the fork, and then went “Um-num-num-num.” Of course, this got me all excited, and I started feeding him bite after bite of strawberry shortcake and encouraging the “num-num-num” cuteness. While he happily gobbled bite after bite of dessert. The kid is a genius.
  3. Sprint. Want to see a kid run like he’s training for the Olympics? Open the dishwasher. He’s around the corner and grabbing for the silverware like there’s a freaking fire.
  4. Defy toilet rules. We had a big problem with Baby Boy splashing in the toilet water (and dropping things into the bowl) when the lid was left open. So I finnnnnally trained Darling Husband to keep the lids closed (he’s always been awesome at leaving the seat down, so this was a new battle for us). And then what does Baby Boy do? Learn to lift the lid with one fat little hand so the other hand can splash in the water. Sigh. Off to buy toilet locks. I hope our guests figure out how to use them.
  5. Explore the outdoors. We’ve been spending a lot of time with Baby Boy outside lately, now that Nova Scotia seems to have woken the eff up and realized it doesn’t have to rain EVERY day. And he has loved plucking stands of grass and dandelions and carrying them around. BIG progress the other day at the park, when he picked up some bark and did NOT immediately put it in his mouth. Please let him be learning not to put every single thing in his mouth. It’s very stressful for Mama.

Not Me Monday: Strange purchases edition

I did not walk into the mall the other day with Baby Boy and Darling Husband and come out with the following (strange!) combination of items:

  • Toilet locks
  • Bubbles
  • Pregnancy tests
  • A bouncy ball
  • A bag of popcorn the size of a garbage bag
It’s like I had some kind of naughty party planned …

My Husband Rocks Friday

Dear Darling Husband,

Thank you for being such a big help before all of our condo showings.

I know it sucks that we haven’t sold our place yet, but I have to admit that these last few months have REALLY demonstrated that you are an awesome cleaner.

The bathrooms? Amazing.
Your magic scrubbing abilities on the kitchen floor? Just … wow.

I half-suspect the reason we haven’t sold the condo yet is because God is showing us that THIS IS HOW OFTEN we are supposed to clean. And … we weren’t quite doing that, before we had to, you know?

Thank you for being my own personal Mr. Clean. I love you!

Love, your wife
xoxo

How to make a baby-friendly quesadilla

Assemble a whole-wheat tortilla, some chopped tomatoes, peppers and chicken, and cheese (babies love cheese like mamas love … well, cheese)

You see, right now they’re chopped to normal-person size …

Chop the crap out of them until they’re baby-sized

I don’t suppose babies can have salsa (little weaklings), so I sort of mushed the pulverized tomato bits onto the tortilla as “salsa.”

Add the so-tiny-you-can-barely-see-them pepper bits, and the crushed-into-tiny-flakes chicken bits

Add cheeeeeeese because babies (and everyone) loves cheeeeeese!

Fold the tortilla over and cut into two lovely chunks

Freeze one, refrigerate one, eat immediately — whatev!

Chop into miniscule bites (common theme here) and serve to your baby!
If they are anything like mine, they will go apeshit for it.
Gobble gobble GOBBLE!

Ole!
