Go fly a (supersized) kite

Yup, I’ve been singing the final song in Mary Poppins all day now. You might, too, now.

Let’s go fly a kite
Up to the highest height!
Let’s go fly a kite and send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let’s go fly a kite!

Our friend, Jamie, the totally-awesome owner of Clay Cafe Truro, asked if the kids and I wanted to take some of their new kites for a spin to get the word out that THEY SELL KITES NOW, YAYYYY!

Of course, it didn’t take much convincing. We’ve flown piddly little kites in our backyard before, since it’s mega-windy up here on top of our hill. But when the kids saw the SIZES of these JUMBO KITES? Oh man, they were pumped!

C chose this pretty unicorn kite with gold stars, a shiny silver born, and a massive orange tail that streaked through the sky like a firework. The quality is amazing!

D chose the shark kite at first — and hey, he didn’t even know it’s Shark Week! — but then changed his mind and picked this huge rainbow bird. It was heavier than C’s and more challenging to get in the air, but once it was up there, it dove and swooped like a real bird.

It’s hot and humid outside (for the millionth day in a row, it seems). Luckily, it was pretty breezy at Civic Square outside our beautiful downtown Truro library.

The kids ran to get the kites going when the wind died down, but when it picked up, there was no stopping those things. They’re heavy-duty! The force of C’s kite was so strong, it actually dragged her around for a while! 😉

(We had an audience of day-campers sitting under the trees by the police station, watching us run around and laugh like maniacs. And an older lady stepped in to help D with his at one point. Everybody loves a kite!)

I even found myself doing the ol’ “lick your finger and hold it up to check the direction of the wind” thingy, except I still didn’t know what to do with that information. Launch the kite towards the breeze? Into the breeze? Hmmm.

You’re going to want to go to Clay Cafe Truro and get yourself one of these ENORMOUS kites. Trust me on that.

Thanks to Clay Cafe Truro for the ENORMOUS new kites. We had a great afternoon with them, and they’ll get lots more “air time” with these two.

So what do you think?
