We’re not even a week into summer vacation, and already school feels like it ended months ago. Was it really LAST FRIDAY — not even one week ago — they got off the bus for the last time? REALLY?
Our weeks of summer camp have yet to begin, so we’re in those early-summer days of getting used to the new normal.
Hanging out with friends …
Scootering. (Scooting?)
Last summer was The Summer of the Skateboards, so it felt fitting to give into their pleading for “real” scooters (a.k.a. not the plastic three-wheeled one that was too small for even our tiny six-year-old). So we’ve been sweating it out at the skate park, the junior high parking lot, and on the sidewalks. Sweaty, sweaty scooting.
Eating ice cream.
LOTS of ice cream. Mmmm.
Sweating in the heat wave.
Doing schoolwork (like the other day’s 100-word spelling test.)
Cleaning C’s closet. (Well, that was me alone. I wouldn’t let her in because I was smuggling stuff out in black garbage bags.)
And spending LOTS of time at the gloriously air-conditioned local library. Oh, how I LOVE OUR LIBRARY!
I know the summer’s barely begun — and it’s likely gonna GET UGLY SOON — so I’m making a point of trying to keep my chill and enjoy things as much as possible.
After all, this quote is flying around social media and as much as I resent its seething smugness (SOME OF US HAVE TO EARN MONEY, MA’AM) I must agree that she has a point.
I’m not getting as much work done as I’d like, but I’m trying to relax about that. Trying to keep things in perspective. Trying not to worry. Trying to reassure myself that my career (and my bank account) aren’t doomed because I spend the morning at the library helping the kids make slime, or taking them to the pool.
I’m doing enough to get by, and so far it’s OK.
I’m OK.
I hope you are, too.
I have had no time to work at all. Plus they’re stealing all my bandwidth. 🙃
