Remember last September when I was a guest on “Eyes for the Job”? Well, they were kind enough to ask me to come back for another episode, and it just aired earlier this week.
“Eyes for the Job” is DIY show on AMI starring Chris Judge and Alex Haider. Chris is blind but that doesn’t stop him from being a truly awesome carpenter. Alex is newer to DIY — most people recognize her from her days on Global — but has some serious skillz. They’re both so sweet and friendly. I’ve shot four days with them in total, and it’s always so much fun.
In this episode, we worked together to turn an old farmhouse window into a cool coffee table.
We started by making a big wooden box …
… then Alex and I painted it.
(It’s pretty funny that the voiceover says how I “chose” the paint colours, when really I was NOT a fan of the colours provided and actually insisted on adding black to the purple to make it super dark so it wasn’t a Barney-esque coffee table. #paintdiva)
Naturally, I made sure to turn quickly for a nice ol’ hair flip. 😉
Then we put the box on casters and used piano hinges to secure the window to the “box.” We also added a sheet of clear acrylic over the window to protect the old flakey painted finish.
Then we had to shoot me taking the coffee “home,” except the show is shot in Dartmouth and we couldn’t schlepp the whole crew an hour away to Truro.
So this was “my” house for the day. 😉
I didn’t get to keep the coffee table but it DID turn out really nice! We put teacups, books, and plants inside it to make it pretty for the final reveal.
One scene that was cut involved me driving “my” minivan across Dartmouth to transport “my” new table to “my” house. It was hilarious to drive circle after circle around the neighbourhood with a camera guy sitting in the passenger seat, shooting me. I have never felt so self-conscious driving!
Thankfully I parked the van safely once we had enough footage, but then I guess it ended up on the cutting room floor anyway! 😉
Thanks again to Chris, Alex, and the crew for having me back. It’s always so much fun!
