When I’m working, I’m completely zoned out and don’t register that I’m hungry until suddenly I’m STARVING and ready to eat anything in sight. I feel like I’m too busy to stop and make something — even if it’s just opening a can of tuna and making a sandwich — so I used to run upstairs to the kitchen and grab a handful of crackers, a bowl of cereal, a granola bar, or another non-meal that takes mere seconds to prepare.
I call it “pre-plating,” but basically it’s just doubling down on dinner leftovers (or a lunch I’ve actually taken the time to make) and plating up more servings to have at another time. I wrap each plate or bowl in plastic wrap, stack ’em up, and stick them in the fridge. When I realize I’m hungry — and, being the sort of person who easily slips into her own world and fails to notice things around her, this is not usually 12 noon on the dot — I run upstairs, toss a plate in the microwave on reheat, and BOOM! A meal is served.
It’s so silly, in a way, since it wouldn’t take much longer to grab a large container of leftovers from the fridge, scoop some onto a plate when I need it, and heat it up, but somehow IT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE. I’ll be working away and suddenly remember I have ready-to-eat lunch upstairs, and it’s like yesssssssssss!
(I also happily eat these plates for breakfast, because I’m lazy when it comes to cooking and honestly don’t care WHAT it is — Shepherd’s pie at 8 a.m.? Sure! — as long as it’s easy.)
Today, for instance, I still have two remaining plates of chicken/veggie wrap, roasted potatoes, and broccoli sitting up in the fridge waiting for me. (I just ate the third plate a few minutes ago for breakfast, which prompted me to write this post.) It’s a pretty great feeling knowing it’s there. 😉
